About Me

Just another Wisconsin bird nerd, but I'm a big fan of The Flaig Family and their prarrie chicken viewing.

My sister and I were more than a little wary about traveling half way across the state to see a couple of male prarrie chickens practicing booming, especially since the fog had been as thick as peanut butter for the past four days. But, almost like a sign of the good things to come, the fog lifted and clouds parted to give us a beautiful sunny morning. We counted 30+ males in front of us and estimate that there were at least another twenty behind us, plus two females. Not bad for this tearly in the year.
The prarrie chickens often came within ten feet in front of our blind and from the scratching sounds on the roof, we guess there were some we could not see who came closer.
The sounds were almost too much for us to handle, as exhibited by our inability to stifle our laughs of disbelief and trying to keep our necessary comments to whispers loud enough to be heard over the prarrie chickens, but quiet enough not to scare them off.
The topping on this most perfect birding experience was the hospitality showed us by Carl Flaig and his family.
I can't wait to come up again!
